Art exhibition by The Welsh Group, one of Wales’ most established and respected groups of artists. The Welsh Group was initially founded in 1948 as the South Wales Group which at that stage consisted of professional and amateur artists from south Wales’s six leading art societies. However, by 1975 its complexion had radically changed becoming a professional only collective re-naming itself The Welsh Group. Throughout its history the group has exhibited widely in Wales and Internationally, showing in Florida and California last year and in Dusseldorf later this year. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998 with an exhibition in The National Museum of Wales, a subsequent tour and publication of its history written by Dr Peter Wakelin. In 2008 a sixtieth anniversary was also celebrated, with a major publication and exhibition (The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth) of the work of current members curated and written by Dr Ceri Thomas.
Some artist groups are formed to work around a particular agenda with a specified manifesto of ideals within which to work. The Welsh Group are not dominated by any movement or style or manifesto but come together as professional individuals attempting to promote and exhibit art of high quality, and to give a sense of comradeship and belonging to artists living and working in Wales. As such The Welsh Group demonstrate a wide cross section of conceptual approaches in contemporary visual arts practice and a range of working media. The Welsh Group currently has 42 active members located across the whole of Wales (Including Merthyr Tydfil). Its members are amongst the best known and respected practitioners currently working in the visual arts within Wales. For further information on the society visit: www.thewelshgroup-art.com
