Koreless – White Picket Fence | Video of the Week

This is Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at “White Picket Fence” from Koreless.

As we celebrate the release of the first 10 nominations of our new series, ‘100 Greatest Welsh Albums of All Time’, we take a look at the music video for ‘White Picket Fence’ – a track taken from Koreless’ album, Agor, which comes in at 91 on the list. The video is directed by FKA Twigs, which she describes, saying:

“The ‘White Picket Fence’ visual is a modern day re-enactment of a fable that doesn’t exist. Each character represents a sound in the music and the audience is a voyeur as the music is personified into a mystical happening. This is my first time directing a music video for another artist, I am so grateful to Koreless and Object & Animal for the opportunity.”

In the first ten albums of our countdown to the Greatest Welsh Album of All Time, Jack Boyce writes on Koreless’ 2021 record, Agor:

“Ten years in the making, the debut album from Bangor producer Lewis Roberts made good on his early promise as an artist’s artist. After working with the likes of Sampha, SBTRKT & FKA Twigs while maintaining a healthy reputation amongst club scenes, Agor shied away from the dancefloor in favour of an immaculately produced, heady electronic album that is endlessly fascinating as it unravels. Agor – Welsh for ‘Open’ – is as advertised: a horizon-spanning record that excels in its most grandiose moments, but structures sound design in a way that rewards those who listen through the many layers that clash and glide across each other with a chrome sheen. Between each peak is a valley of cut and chopped samples that segues with such grace that the journey is often as delightful, if not more, than the large awe-inspiring climaxes. A stark, impeccably designed record that could easily have sound tracked a blockbuster, galaxy explorative sci-fi classic movie, yet also excels when brought to ground level for its more delicate moments.”
