Welsh Artists of Instagram

Join Wales Arts Review as we seek to build an inspiring list of Welsh Artists of Instagram. Help us to discover and highlight some of the most thrilling visual artists showcasing their work today on the social media app.

It can sometimes feel that visual arts fit uncomfortably inside the digital sphere. From the tactility and immersive nature of visual arts experienced in-person to the brief proliferation of NFTs which flooded the artistic conversation with discussions of money and ownership, some have argued what works on the canvas is lost in the cold light of our devices.

Arguably this tension was felt most viscerally during the pandemic, like every other area of the arts, galleries and artists were forced to supplement their typical offerings with remote alternatives such as virtual gallery tours and livestream discussion. And yet, in the age of social media, our engagement and access to images is immediate and every day. For many artists, even pre-pandemic, Instagram provided a novel and direct way to reach existing audiences and branch out and engage new ones.

When every other aspect of our lives exists in the social media sphere, why should art be any different? Instagram, in particular, is positioned as a uniquely visual experience. It can serve as both a host to artist’s work, and an extension – something to draw people to the exhibitions held offline as well as what can be experienced in-app. Across Wales and around the world, Welsh artists are taking advantage of this particular avenue to debut not only new and interesting work, but pieces which might not exist the same way off screen as they do in the scrollable world of hashtags and Instagram tiles.

Spanning multiple forms and mediums, Wales Arts Review collates a list of the many Welsh artists connecting and sharing their work through Instagram today. A living document which will continue to form and grow – just like the Welsh artists fuelling it – we here share a thorough, but no means exhaustive, introduction to the great and many Welsh artists of Instagram.
