Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at ‘Purge The Poison’ from MARINA.
This week we’ve selected the latest music video from Welsh singer-songwriter MARINA as our video of the week. Released a month ago today, the single comes ahead of her upcoming album Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, due to be released on 11th June. ‘Purge the Poison’ is jam-packed with cultural and political references, from quarantine life to Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement.
MARINA has described the chorus as being written from the perspective of “Mother Nature”, with the song serving as a broader warning about the state of global affairs and climate change: “Need to purge the poison from my system / Until human beings listen /Tell me, who do you think you are? / It’s your own decision / But your home is now your prison / You forgot that, without me, you won’t go far”.
This single marks a return to the quirky alt-pop sound of MARINA’s older albums (when she was known as ‘Marina and the Diamonds’) prior to the more commercial turn of her last album Love + Fear. The video for ‘Purge the Poision’ was directed by Weird Life Films and an alternative version – featuring Pussy Riot – was released on 5th May and can be watched here.
Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land is MARINA’s fifth studio album and will be released through Atlantic Records on 11th June.
