Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at “Interval” from The Joy Formidable.
North Wales band The Joy Formidable have released the music video for ‘Interval’, the fourth single from their latest album, Into the Blue. The music video, edited by the band’s drummer Matt Thomas, was filmed at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah. The Joy Formidable recently relocated to the US mountain state after writing much of their new album in Wales.
The video features members of the band walking, running and rolling down golden sand dunes. In a blogpost on the band’s website, singer and guitarist Rhiannon ‘Ritzy’ Bryan said the landscape of the sand dunes was “a perfect setting for a song about change and finding yourself at a juncture in life. It’s a song about finding your power again and feeling free”. The Joy Formidable are playing at the FOCUS Wales international showcase festival in Wrexham next month before kicking off a US tour in November.
Reviewing the Flintshire band’s fifth album, Wales Arts Review editor Gary Raymond described the song as an “utter triumph,” comparing it favourably to the songs of Echo & the Bunnymen and The Cure. The album, which Raymond dubbed a return to form for the band and one of the best of 2021 so far, was released on 20th August 2021 and is available to buy on the band’s website.
