In May, WNO marks its 70th anniversary with a bold operatic adaptation of David Jones’ epic war poem, In Parenthesis. Jones’ monumental work, which T.S. Eliot regarded a masterpiece, recounts his experiences in the Somme and in particular as a Royal Welch Fusilier at the battle of Mametz Wood.
As part of the build up to this hotly anticipated opera, which artistic director David Pountney has called both an evocation and a commemoration of the events of the Somme, Michael Sheen performs an extract, the famous ‘boast of Dai Greatcoat’, from the original poem.
