There have been few interviewers to ever reach Dick Cavett for his relaxed, personable approach to his subjects and his talent for making them at ease was rarely more obviously on display than over the two hours of interviews recorded in a studio before a live audience with Richard Burton in 1980. Burton starts out quite nervous, but Cavett, who clearly has an amount of affection for his interviewee, wastes little time in making Burton as comfortable as had it been a fireside chat between two old friends. Burton holds back on nothing, and what follows is perhaps the great Welsh actor’s most revealing, passionate and unguarded of interviews.
If they certainly don’t make them like Richard Burton anymore, they most certainly don’t make them like Dick Cavett either.
