Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at the virtual final of Green Man Rising 2021.

This week, we take a look at the video for the Green Man Rising 2021 competition which was live-streamed in July ahead of the festival at the end of August. Running from 19th-22nd August, Green Man festival returned following its cancellation last year with a sold out festival extravaganza. 25,000 festival-goers came from all over the UK to camp at the beautiful site nestled in the black mountains. The festival is estimated to contribute £15m to the welsh economy every year.

Prior to the festival, The Green Man Rising competition finale was livestreamed featuring finalists: Teddy Hunter, Grandmas House, Threads, Clara Mann & Paige Kennedy. The Green Man trust describes the competition as:

“Our annual Green Man Rising competition is a part of our Music Development Programme which offers the chance for one talented new band to open the Mountain Stage. It’s free to enter and the finalists compete at an iconic London venue, judged by a panel of top industry professionals (MOJO, Bella Union, Domino Records, Moshi Moshi, Kilimanjaro, NME, Guardian among others). All finalists are programmed on the 2,000 capacity Rising stage, giving the bands media exposure and access to wider audiences.”

Cardiff native Teddy Hunter took first prize in Green Man Rising 2021, beating competition from 3,000 hopefuls and over 30,000 votes to win the annual award.  Announcing her win, Managing Director and festival owner Fiona Stewart, said:

“I want to thank all the artists and the judges who took part in Green Man Rising. The judges all agreed that the standard of all the finalists was so incredibly high this year, and I’m so pleased that Cardiff’s very own Teddy Hunter is our winner! […] It’s not fair to have favorites but of course we were pleased when the judges chose a Welsh winner. She’ll make a spectacular addition to our line-up, and the Black Mountains are the perfect backdrop for her talent.”
