Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at “The Art of Losing” from The Anchoress.
Today our video comes from The Anchoress (Catherine Anne Davies) with the music video for ‘The Art of Losing’, the title single from her album of the same name. The Art of Losing explores the theme of loss in all its forms, and comes after a very difficult period for Davies personally following the loss of her father, several miscarriages, and a cervical cancer diagnosis.
Tilly Foulkes reviewed the album for Wales Arts Review, describing The Art of Losing as “a consuming experience that incites a full-body emotional reaction” adding that “the album approaches cruelty and pain unflinchingly – Davies’s lyrics are as unapologetic as they are truthful and raw”.
The album was initially due for release in March of 2020, but after the outbreak of the COVID pandemic the release date was pushed back a year. Davies discussed this in an interview Music Radar, saying: “The album was actually finished in 2019 [..] so I got to sit with it for a lot longer than planned, but that’s had its upsides in terms of my having more time to process a lot of the things I’m talking about on the record.”
